This tutorial discusses the AUTOMATIC TRANSFER SWITCH or ONLINE PDU.
In Parts One to Four of our PDU Tutorial Series, we defined the different types of PDU based on the “output” of the PDU. The AUTOMATIC TRANSFER SWITCH (ATS) or ONLINE PDU is defined by the functions available at the “input” side of the PDU.
The ATS or ONLINE PDU has two different and distinct input sources and can automatically switch between the two sources with no interruption to provide power for the PDU. If, for example, your primary source is an inverter and it fails or requires maintenance, the ATS allows a seamless switchover to a secondary source (e.g. a generator or utility mains). The power supply to the PDU is not interrupted in the process.
This arrangement is not negotiable for sensitive Server Rooms or Data Centers.
When the transfer switching is done manually, then you have a Manual Transfer Switch.
For the output side, you can still have all the features of a Basic PDU, or a Switched, Monitored/Metered, or Intelligent PDU depending on the manufacturer’s configuration. In nearly all cases, the ATS or ONLINE UPS comes as an Intelligent PDU.
